History of Heraklion Airport
The first landing in Heraklion Airport (HER) (In Greek: Αεροδρόμιο στο Ηράκλειο) took place in the summer of 1939, when a small Junkers-52 with a 14 people capacity landed with its first passengers.
The airport in Herakleion initially offered primitive services to its passengers. There were only 3 tents and storm lamps were used for the lights on the runway. In addition, fires from dry grass were lit to determine the direction of the wind. Today it has transformed in to an international airport and it is housed in new buildings since 1971. It is officially the second busiest airport in Greece and it is located only 4km away from the city center.
