Paleochora City

Paleochora (In Greek: Παλαιόχωρα and also spelled Palaiochora)

is a small coastal town in the southwest Crete, located 70km from Chania and 32km from Sougia. It is build on a peninsula between two beautiful bays and due to its location it has been called the “Bride of the Libyan Sea”.

The fact that Paleochora is surrounded by mountains and it is built on a peninsula has many advantages, one of them being that you can always find a beach protected by the strong winds.

To its west bay you can find a navy lighthouse that signals for the ships travelling to the Suez Canal or Gibraltar.

You can catch a ferry from the east bay, if you want to visit Sougia,  Loutro, Chora Sfakia, Gavdos or Elafonisi. Of course its easiest and more comfortable to book your Taxi for your guided tour. Palaiochora as well as Sougia is ideal departure point for visiting Omalos-Samaria Gorge or Agia Irini Gorge. To diminish any confusion that might arise. Omalos or Xyloskalo is the top entry of Samaria Gorge and Agia Roumeli is the bottom entance. Agia Eirini Gorge is a smaller easier to walk gorge.
